Lasermet was pleased to participate in the DOE Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Workshop 2026, held at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) last May 19–21, 2026. The annual workshop brings together laser safety professionals, researchers, and industry experts from across the U.S. Department of Energy community to discuss current challenges, emerging technologies, and best practices in laser safety.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to engage directly with Laser Safety Officers and facility managers responsible for some of the world’s most advanced laser installations. Throughout the workshop, attendees shared experiences and discussed practical approaches to maintaining safe and compliant laser operations in increasingly complex research environments.
Demonstrating Laser Safety Solutions
At the workshop, Lasermet showcased a range of laser safety products designed to support safe laser operation across research, industrial, and defence applications.
Among the systems on display was the ICS-MAGELLAN, Lasermet’s advanced laser safety interlock controller. The ICS-MAGELLAN provides centralised monitoring and control of laser-controlled areas, combining high-integrity safety functionality with modern networking and system integration capabilities. Attendees were able to explore how the platform can simplify the management of complex laser facilities while maintaining compliance with laser safety requirements.

Also demonstrated was the CaLM (Control and Laser Monitoring) System, which enables remote monitoring, control, and administration of laser safety systems across multiple laboratories and facilities. The CaLM platform attracted considerable interest from organisations seeking improved visibility and management of distributed laser safety infrastructure.
Visitors also had the opportunity to see Lasermet’s range of laser beam shutters, including the LS-30 Series Shutters and LS-300 Series Shutters. These high-integrity safety shutters are designed to provide reliable beam containment and laser emission control as part of a comprehensive laser safety system. Discussions focused on shutter selection, safety integration, and the importance of independent beam termination methods within laser-controlled areas.
Laser Beam Shutter Giveaway
As part of our participation in the workshop, Lasermet ran a laser beam shutter giveaway, giving attendees the opportunity to win a free Lasermet laser safety shutter. The giveaway generated significant interest and provided an opportunity to discuss the role of engineered safety controls in modern laser installations.

Tour of the National Ignition Facility
A highlight of the workshop was the opportunity to tour the National Ignition Facility (NIF), one of the world’s most advanced laser research facilities.
The NIF houses the largest and most energetic laser system ever constructed, supporting cutting-edge research in high-energy-density physics, fusion science, and national security applications. For many attendees, the facility tour provided a unique opportunity to observe the scale and complexity of laser safety management required within a world-leading laser research environment.
The visit reinforced the critical importance of robust laser safety systems, comprehensive administrative controls, and effective risk management practices when operating high-power laser facilities.



Looking Ahead
The DOE LSO Workshop continues to be one of the most valuable events for the laser safety community, providing a forum for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and discussion of emerging challenges within the field.
