In 1986, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published its first comprehensive standard for laser safety <strong>ANSI Z136.1 &#8211; Safe Use of Lasers<\/strong>. This set of guidelines introduced formal requirements for interlocks on Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems which are those capable of causing immediate injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key elements introduced or reinforced by ANSI Z136.1 included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fail-safe design<\/strong>: Interlocks should default to a safe state in case of failure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tamper resistance<\/strong>: Users should not be able to easily override the interlock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Audible\/visual alarms<\/strong>: Warning signals
